I was raised by someone and around people who would attack apologizers for exposing any vulnerability around family, classmates, teammates, or whomever— and the damage has been a pain to manage over the decades.
I guess in spaces lile this it's better to avoid creating a reason to apologize, because we won't likely have an opportunity to.

My guess as for the deletion would be that you probably opened a new thread, which could have been interpreted as being off-topic for that particular forum.
You learned your lesson: "Never apologize!" ;D

It was only a reply in-thread. Another reply in a different thread was deleted this week. What they had in common that retained posts don't: I mentioned a specific social institution (not a specific organization and not with any derogatory words) that might could possibly make site moderators nervous. But the posts might have been be considered off-topic for not sticking to simple answers to explicit questions. No way to know.
